Chip shape during tapping
If the chips are thin and short, they can be considered to have a good shape that is easy to discharge.
If the chips are thick and long, there is a risk that they may get caught in the tap, so caution is required.
For spiral‑fluted taps, chips are discharged in the opposite direction to the feed direction of the tap.
If the chips are poorly formed, they may become trapped between the tap and the machined thread, causing problems.
When the cutting speed is appropriate, the chips tend to form in a shape that is easy to evacuate (narrow curl and fine pitch).
In addition, deep‑hole machining inevitably produces a large volume of chips, making chip evacuation more difficult because the chips become long.
In tapping, when the machining depth exceeds two times the tool diameter (2D), it is considered deep‑hole machining.
